First Spring Trial Results

Many thanks to all who supported the trial especially our friends who traveled some distance from Rhode Island and New Brunswick. Despite the rain on Saturday morning during the derby stake, we had a terrific trial. Mud was the order of the day on the road to our wild bird courses due to logging activity and work being done on the power lines over the winter. Recent rain also made for boggy areas turning to shallow ponds but no one comes to spring trials in Maine unprepared for such circumstances. The walking was tough but we had plenty of birds and good dog work to make it all worth the effort. Sunday — cooler but sunny — could not have been more beautiful for running dogs.

Despite the long winter, dogs seemed in good shape and as happy as their handlers to be out trialing again. Thanks to Steve Forrest, Cal Robinson for judging the derby, and Kevin Harris, Mike Flewelling, Russ Ogilvie and Chris Mathan for judging the wild bird shooting dog stakes. Many thanks to club secretary Pat Forrest and member Al Robbins for getting lunches together, Pat for attending to secretary duties as well, and everyone who waged the mud driving us to the starting lines. (…that would be you Ricky!) Thanks to Pat and Steve for again hosting Saturday evening’s potluck at their home and to everyone who brought food including Amy Robinson who made a terrific pasta salad. Mike Flewelling brought grouse stew, Al Robbins brought spaghetti and meatballs and Joe Dahl’s wife sent along the homemade desserts.

Seems like everyone had a good time. Congratulations to all the winners!

Joe Dahl’s new prospect!

RGS biologist, Andy Weik came by on Saturday to watch the trial. He was visiting Maine from his home in New York state for the Burton Spiller Chapter’s fundraising banquet. He left the trial with a Midcoast Maine cap. We hope this is a good sign that bird dog field trialing will be in Andy’s son Collin’s future. Here he is zonked out after a day of turkey hunting!

Another successful spring trial in the books!

Congrats to all the winners. Thanks to all who came and ran their dogs. Field trialers came from Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and around Maine.

Thanks to those who judged, planted birds, moved vehicles and helped out in all the ways needed to make a trial a success. Thanks to all who made and brought all the delicious food for the Potluck Supper…thanks especially to Steve and Patty for allowing the club to have the Potluck at their beautiful home. Thank you to the new club secretary, Patty, for doing all the hard work that club secretaries do…and that’s rarely acknowledged!
